Hancock County is the southernmost county in the state of Mississippi. It is named after John Hancock, one of the country’s founding fathers and one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. Hancock is the only county in the state where Roman Catholics outnumber Baptists, which is due to the area’s French heritage and the Roman Catholic history of southern Louisiana, which borders the western portion of the county. Finally, the Rocket Propulsion Test Complex, located on the John C. Stennis Space Center, is a National Historic Landmark.
